The why on certifications Everyone has an opinion on technical certification exams. For me, it is just another excuse to block my agenda to study a few days. I don’t attach more value to the certificate than seeing it as a proof that someone at least went very thoroughly through a specific piece of knowledge. No less, no more. For us at vBridge, there is no discussion: everyone has to certify to some level because we have some important partnerships that require this....

Not secure by default Let’s start with a bold statement: Google Cloud IaaS is not secure by default. Don’t start scrambling your security engineers just yet, the solution is just a few reading minutes away… To make it as convenient as possible, tcp ports 22 (SSH) and 3389 (RDP) are opened by default in the firewall after clicking through the ‘create instance’ wizard in Google Cloud’s default network. (source) This way, if your vm has a public IP, your virtual machine is reachable through RDP (Windows) or SSH (Linux) right after creation....

Het moet me van het hart. Er ligt een Cisco RV320 naast mij, een vpn-routertje gelabeld ‘small business’, en ik moet daarvan gedwongen afscheid nemen. Niet dat er iets mis mee is hoor, maar het toestel kreeg de stempel end of life. Kudos, my not so old friend. De ‘end of life’ is overigens geen term die ik verzin, maar wel de fabrikant, Cisco. Maar eerst even terugspoelen… Helaas heb ik de leeftijd bereikt waarin m’n carrière stilaan in decennia kan uitgedrukt worden....

Met vBridge bouwen we intussen al enkele jaren aan cloudoplossingen voor klanten, en de voorbije 11 maanden gebeurde dat gedwongen remote-only. Gezien de aard van het werk lukt dat vanuit praktisch oogpunt eigenlijk prima, maar toch… Het kriebelt om terug samen aan de koffiemachine te staan, een scherm te draaien om iets te demonstreren, collega’s ‘yessss’ te horen sissen als ze een lastige bug geplet hebben, of gewoon enkele wereldproblemen oplossen tijdens de middagpauze....

Onze studenten ICT hebben intussen hun pentest ingediend, en de evaluatie is achter de rug. De opdrachtgevers kregen een poos terug een verslag met de resultaten, tijd voor een korte terugblik dus… Hoewel we geen specifieke richtlijnen gaven, behoren een groot gedeelte van de sites toe aan KMO’s en vzw’s. Dat uit zich in een relatief groot aantal sites die gebouwd zijn op het Wordpress platform. Vaststelling 1: een gewaarschuwd sysadmin....

Het wordt stilaan een traditie. Ook dit jaar werden onze studenten 3ICT voor het vak data security gevraagd om elk een website te contacteren en die vervolgens door te lichten op vlak van veiligheid. Dat is geheel zonder resultaatsverbintenis, want het blijft een oefening, en uiteraard is de ene student ook de andere niet.
